OpenAI announced on Tuesday the global launch of ChatGPT for Teens, a new version of its artificial intelligence chatbot featuring safety filters and parental control settings for younger users.
The software is built with the same underlying capabilities as the standard model, but OpenAI said it was specifically designed to help teenagers learn, solve problems, and explore new ideas in a protected environment.
Under the new safeguards, the system automatically restricts high-risk conversations involving self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and explicit or graphic sexual content.
Safety filters and parental oversight
The update allows adults who opt to activate parental controls and notifications to receive automated safety alerts from the platform under specific circumstances.
However, these controls do not allow parents or guardians to read or monitor their teenager's chat history. OpenAI stated in a company release that if it sends a safety notification, it only shares information strictly necessary to protect the young person's well-being.
OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research laboratory headquartered in San Francisco, California, released the original ChatGPT in November 2022. The conversational tool quickly gained widespread adoption worldwide for generating text, drafting code, and assisting with complex research tasks.
Age detection and study tools
In addition to content boundaries, ChatGPT for Teens features task reminders that can suggest using a dedicated study mode. The tool helps students complete homework step by step rather than simply providing direct answers.
To determine whether an account belongs to a minor, OpenAI analyzes more than 2,000 behavioral indicators, such as routine login times. When the system detects that a user is under 18 years old, it automatically enables teen mode.
Growing pressure over youth mental health
The global launch comes as OpenAI faces mounting pressure from parents, educators, and mental health advocates concerning the impact of generative artificial intelligence on adolescent development.
Parent organizations in major United States cities, including New York and Los Angeles, have been pushing schools to suspend the use of artificial intelligence tools over concerns that technology reliance harms critical thinking skills.
