Mercedes-Benz C-Class gets major tech and engine update

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the largest technical update in the history of the C-Class saloon, introducing front-end design changes, artificial intelligence software, and upgraded powertrains. The most visible changes to the updated model appear at the front of the vehicle, which now features an illuminated central star emblem and grille surround alongside a radiator grille decorated with numerous small chrome stars. Underneath the revised bodywork, the German carmaker has overhauled the car's electronics and mechanical systems.

The C-Class serves as Mercedes-Benz's core executive model line, positioned between smaller compact vehicles and the executive E-Class in the brand's global lineup. A central component of the new update is the introduction of MB.OS, the manufacturer's proprietary operating system designed to manage vehicle software and connectivity. The new system expands over-the-air wireless update capabilities and features a redesigned user interface with additional functions. Third-party artificial intelligence platforms, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini, have been integrated directly into the software architecture.

The integrated MBUX Virtual Assistant has been enhanced to handle multi-stage conversations and maintain dialogue context. System capabilities now allow the digital assistant to answer general knowledge questions, locate points of interest, and identify music tracks based on partial lyrics or vague descriptions provided by the driver. Mercedes described the updated assistant as a digital passenger designed to remain constantly available to support vehicle occupants.

Inside the cabin, the updated C-Class retains a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel alongside an 11.9-inch vertically oriented central display screen. Satellite navigation services are powered by Google software. Optional equipment upgrades include an augmented reality head-up display similar to the units installed in the top-tier S-Class saloon and electric EQS models. Buyers can also specify a 15-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system equipped with Dolby Atmos spatial audio technology.

Engine specifications and driver assistance

Under the bonnet, the American specification C-Class features a modernized 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The combustion engine produces 255 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, while an integrated starter-generator provides an additional boost of 23 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque. Mild hybrid setups store energy generated during braking to assist the main engine during acceleration and reduce overall fuel consumption.

To enhance engine responsiveness at lower engine speeds, engineers have added an electric auxiliary compressor. An overboost function can temporarily increase total power output by an additional 27 horsepower for approximately 20 seconds. Additional mechanical adjustments include a retuned suspension setup and enhanced acoustic insulation to quieten the cabin. The aerodynamic drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.24, while driver assistance systems rely on a network of eight cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

The MB.DRIVE Parking Assist 360 package is now included as standard equipment across the range. The parking system incorporates a 360-degree surround-view camera system with improved spatial visualization around the car. A new automatic reverse maneuver feature allows the vehicle to trace its path backwards along a portion of a recently driven route, assisting drivers when navigating narrow lanes, dead-end driveways, or confined parking spaces.

European lineup and exterior styling

The model lineup offered to European customers will be broader than the American range. In addition to four-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options, European buyers will have access to the C-Class Estate station wagon and the C 400 e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid model. The plug-in hybrid incorporates a traction battery with a usable capacity of 19.53 kWh, providing an all-electric driving range of up to 100 kilometres measured under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). The battery supports alternating current (AC) charging at up to 11 kW and direct current (DC) fast charging at up to 55 kW.

European models can also be optioned with an all-wheel steering chassis that includes steerable rear wheels. The rear wheels turn by up to 2.5 degrees, reducing the turning circle of the saloon by 43 centimetres to 10.64 metres while improving handling stability during high-speed driving manoeuvres.

Exterior visual updates extend beyond the front grille to include restyled front and rear bumpers, revised headlamps and tail lamps featuring a star-shaped lighting signature, and new alloy wheel designs. Optional Digital Light headlights now utilize micro-LED technology. Mercedes reported that the micro-LED system projects a larger and more detailed light field while consuming up to 50 percent less energy than previous headlight systems.

For the first time on the C-Class, an AMG Line Plus package is available, adding the Night Package, high-gloss black finish on the spoiler and exhaust trim, sports seats with red contrast stitching, and matching red seatbelts. Two new exterior paint options, Miami Silver Metallic and Moody Sky Grey Metallic, join the color palette. Pricing details for the updated vehicle have not been announced, with US dealership arrivals scheduled for the first half of 2027.
