A lead accountant at a Russian forestry service in Krasnoyarsk Krai has been accused of stealing 32 million rubles over a 10-year embezzlement scheme, according to law enforcement authorities.
The alleged fraud took place at the Bolshemurtinsky forestry enterprise, located near Krasnoyarsk, where prosecutors state that the woman transferred government funds to herself and her supervisor.
The state news agency TASS reported the case following an announcement from the Krasnoyarsk Krai regional prosecutor's office. Investigators charged the accountant under Russian criminal statutes governing large-scale fraud.
Method of the embezzlement
According to law enforcement officials, the illegal operation began in 2015 when the director of the forestry service discovered that only the lead accountant possessed access credentials for the organization's banking system.
The director then proposed that they use her exclusive access to extract money from the enterprise. Over the following decade, the accountant routinely drafted fictitious financial registries to justify the transfers.
Each month, she transferred funds to her personal bank card in amounts that were several times higher than her official salary. She kept a portion of the money for herself and handed the remainder to her director as cash in an envelope, while the director covered up her actions.
Spending of stolen funds
Investigators found that the accountant used her share of the 32 million rubles to purchase consumer electronics, gold jewelry, and a snowmobile. She also used the stolen money to pay for home renovations and to provide financial loans to her relatives.

The Bolshemurtinsky forestry enterprise operates in Bolshemurtinsky District, situated in Krasnoyarsk Krai in central Siberia. Regional forestry services in Russia are responsible for overseeing public timberlands, supervising forest conservation, and managing state forestry resources across vast territorial zones.
The prosecution comes amid heightened scrutiny of public sector accounting practices in Russia. In a separate recent case, a 59-year-old former chief accountant at a Saint Petersburg school was sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of hiring a hitman to target her neighbor.
