A How-To Geek writer has named four free programs that he installs on every new Windows PC after a clean system installation. He noted that fresh Windows setups often lack useful features, leading experienced users to add software tools that make work faster and more convenient.
The recommended utilities expand system capabilities and resolve tasks that standard Microsoft tools cannot easily handle.
The writer identified VLC Media Player as a universal player to replace Windows Media Player. Older versions of Windows Media Player often failed to open video files without extra codecs, forcing users to convert videos or look for third-party programs. VLC Media Player solves this issue by playing almost any video or audio format without additional setup, including home videos, online clips, DVD copies, and rare file types. The main advantage of VLC is its simplicity, as users can open files without adjusting codecs or troubleshooting errors.
File Compression and Instant Search Tools
The author also recommended 7-Zip, a free and open-source file compression tool. While users previously paid for file archivers, 7-Zip eliminated that need by offering high compression rates and support for many formats, including its own 7z format. The software has no purchase reminders, paid updates, or registration requirements. Although Windows later improved its built-in ZIP support, 7-Zip offers broader capabilities and remains one of the first utilities installed after a web browser.
To fix slow file searches, the writer installs Everything, a free program that indexes files and displays search results instantly as users type. Built-in Windows search remains a weak point in the system, forcing users to wait or search folders manually. Everything turns the hard drive into a searchable database with a simple interface focused on finding files quickly without navigating multiple folders.
PowerToys and Windows Operating System Updates
The list includes Microsoft PowerToys, a free toolkit designed to expand Windows features for advanced users. PowerToys provides tools for window layout management, batch file renaming, window pinning, expanded file previews, key remapping, app launching, and color selection. The writer noted that Microsoft uses PowerToys to test new ideas with the community before potentially adding them directly into future operating system updates.
The report added that Microsoft unexpectedly extended support for Windows 10 by one year, moving the end date from October 2025 to October 2027.
