Greek Secretary General of Civil Protection Nikos Papaefstathiou convened the Risk Assessment Committee on Saturday, August 8, 2026, alongside Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas. Officials met to address strong northerly to northeasterly winds expected across large parts of the country in the coming days, combined with high temperatures in western Greece.

Committee scientists reported that on Sunday, August 9, northerly to northeasterly winds of 6 to 7 Beaufort, reaching 8 Beaufort locally, will affect Thrace, Attica and Boeotia, Euboea, the eastern and southern Peloponnese, the North and East Aegean islands, the Cyclades, Crete, and the Kasos and Karpathos region. Temperatures in western Greece will remain high, reaching 38 to 39 degrees Celsius.
Winds are expected to intensify further on Monday, August 10. Speeds reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort, with local gusts up to 9 Beaufort, are forecast for Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Attica and Boeotia, Euboea, the entire Peloponnese (mainly Laconia), the North, East, Central, and Southwest Aegean, Kythira, and western and southern Crete. From Tuesday, August 11 through the end of the week, winds of 5 to 7 Beaufort will persist in several areas. The committee will meet again tomorrow at 10:30.
