Firefighters in Sitia, Crete, responded to a wildfire on Friday, August 7, near a wind turbine park in the Achladia area.
A total of 40 firefighters, 11 vehicles, and two foot teams from the 3rd Special Disaster Response Unit deployed to the scene alongside volunteers. The Municipality of Sitia also provided assistance using water tankers.
The Fire Service reported that the blaze was burning through low vegetation and had not spread. However, strong winds blowing across the area created difficult conditions for emergency crews working to extinguish the flames.
Fire risk and investigation
Authorities had already placed the area under a Category 3 high fire risk warning prior to the outbreak. The Lasithi Arson Crimes Investigation Unit launched an inquiry to determine what caused the fire.
