Fitbit founders unveil Luffu Link wearable for elder care

James Park and Eric Friedman, the co-founders of fitness tracking pioneer Fitbit, have unveiled Luffu Link, a screenless wearable wristband designed to help families monitor and care for elderly relatives from a distance.

The device, produced by their new company Luffu, enables wearers to share their live location and request immediate help without carrying a smartphone nearby.

Luffu Link relies on built-in GPS and cellular connectivity to transmit location updates to authorized family members. Wearers can press a button on the band to send an urgent request for assistance, or double-press the button to reassure family members that they are safe. Assistance requests are routed directly to designated family contacts rather than emergency services.

To eliminate the need for typing on a screen, the wristband features an integrated microphone that allows users to record notes about medications, symptoms, meals, or medical appointments using their voice. It also includes a speaker to play incoming voice messages from relatives. The company claims the device offers up to five days of battery life, though that estimate assumes GPS tracking is turned off and the band is connected via Bluetooth to a smartphone.

Caregiver App and Mobile Monitoring

Caregivers monitor data from the wristband through a dedicated smartphone application available on iPhone and Android platforms. The app allows users to manage and view health information for up to four family members in a single interface.

According to the company, artificial intelligence integrated into the software organizes voice logs and monitors activity patterns to identify sudden changes in daily habits. Caregivers receive automatic alerts when the system detects unusual patterns. Users can configure privacy settings to control which specific data points are shared and with whom.

Subscription Fees and United States Launch

Operating the Luffu Link requires a mandatory family subscription of $19.99 per month, which is approximately 17.40 euros. The monthly fee covers application access, data analytics, alert services, and cellular network connectivity, meaning users do not need to establish an independent cellular plan with a mobile network operator.

The device is currently available for pre-order at an introductory price of $249.99, or about 218 euros. Once official deliveries begin, the price will increase to $299.99, which is approximately 261 euros. Customer shipments are scheduled to start in early 2027.

The initial release is limited strictly to the United States. The company stated that the product will only be available in the American market for the time being, and it has not announced concrete expansion plans or release dates for Spain or other international markets.

Background of the Founders

Park and Friedman founded Fitbit in 2007, building it into one of the world's prominent consumer electronics brands by popularizing wearable fitness trackers that monitor daily steps, activity, and sleep. Technology conglomerate Google acquired Fitbit in 2021 to bolster its consumer hardware lineup.

Both co-founders left Fitbit in January 2024 following its full integration into Google. They established Luffu in February 2026, creating the company out of their personal experiences navigating health care and remote monitoring for their own family members.
