Promperú: Tourism will continue to reactivate in 2022 and would generate a million jobs

The Tourism sector would contribute 2.5% to the gross domestic product (PBI) and would generate one million jobs this year, according to estimates by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (PromPerú).

In dialogue with the Andina agency, Amora Carbajal, executive president of PromPerú, highlighted the importance of tourism in national production, which in 2021 was 2%, but before the pandemic it came to represent 3.9%.

“For this 2022 we estimate that we will have a recovery and we hope that it will represent 2.5% of GDP,” said the executive.

“So, little by little we are improving, and we hope to have a greater number of international tourists, because we project for this year to receive 540,000 foreign visitors, being conservative, and that we have a million jobs in the sector,” he added.

Carbajal stressed that tourists from the South American region (Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil) are the first to return to Peru, due to its proximity and connectivity. There is also the presence of travelers from the United States and Europe, mainly Spanish, German and French.

Likewise, this year an international campaign will be launched aimed at markets such as the United States, Spain, France, Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

The official of PromPerú He stressed that the world trend is to attract tourists who spend more days on their trips and spend more.

“The post-COVID-19 tourist is looking for that, to stay more days, and Peru offers cultural tourism as a destination, but also nature, adventure and gastronomy,” he said.
