Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro arrived in New York on Tuesday for a three-day visit to participate in the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The first day of the official trip focused on economic matters. During a visit to a newly opened Portuguese filigree jewellery store near Times Square, Montenegro stated that bilateral relations between Portugal and the United States were currently at a magnificent moment.
He noted that Portuguese entrepreneurs and businesses demonstrate a strong capacity to export the country's culture and tradition. He added that these commercial efforts serve not only as successful individual ventures but also as a doorway opening Portugal to the world.
Economic Engagement in New York
In addition to visiting the Times Square retail store, the head of the Portuguese government was invited to participate in the closing bell ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange. The ceremonial event on Wall Street capped the economic focus of his first day in Manhattan.
When asked by reporters whether the positive economic climate extended into the political sphere, Montenegro deferred further statements until Wednesday. He told journalists that political topics would be discussed on the second day of his trip.
The United Nations General Assembly convenes annually at its headquarters in New York, gathering heads of state and government leaders from around the world for high-level diplomatic discussions.
Bilateral Meeting with UN Chief
Reporters also questioned Montenegro regarding his absence from the final address delivered by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday morning. The address took place before the General Assembly prior to the prime minister's aircraft landing in New York.
Montenegro responded that he would be meeting with the UN chief on Wednesday. A bilateral meeting between the two leaders is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, which corresponds to 2:30 p.m. in Lisbon.
Guterres, a former Portuguese prime minister, will step down from his post at the end of December. His departure comes after completing two consecutive five-year terms leading the global organization.
