French President Emmanuel Macron met United States President Donald Trump in New York on Monday for a half-hour discussion aimed at securing swift international progress.
Speaking to journalists following the meeting on the sidelines of the annual United Nations summit, Macron described the talks as very constructive and said both leaders had examined key international crises affecting global peace, security and French purchasing power.
The diplomatic encounter brought the two leaders together in New York for an intense thirty-minute session to test their complex working relationship. The United Nations General Assembly brings together world leaders each September at its international headquarters in New York City to address pressing global security issues and regional conflicts.
Shipping lines and the Strait of Hormuz
Addressing ongoing crises in the Middle East, Macron stressed the need to take all possible steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore commercial maritime volumes. He outlined diplomatic solutions that could enable more container ships and oil tankers to pass through the strategic waterway, even without a comprehensive global agreement.
Discussions between the two presidents also covered maritime security in the Red Sea, focusing on how to protect oil export points without triggering confrontation or further escalation. According to a diplomatic source, France is currently working on a draft United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at unblocking access through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, carrying a large portion of global oil shipments. The Red Sea is another vital trade route connecting the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal.
Defense interceptors and support for Ukraine
The conflict in Ukraine formed another major part of the talks between the French and American leaders. Macron advocated providing Ukrainian forces with faster and stronger assistance, identifying air defense interceptors as a key requirement for defense.
Prior to the meeting, sources in the French president's entourage indicated that Macron planned to convince Trump to maintain support for Ukraine and reinforce diplomatic pressure on Russia.
Protection of Ukrainian energy infrastructure
The two leaders also discussed a potential moratorium on strikes targeting energy infrastructure. Macron stated that securing such a moratorium would be a good objective, adding that he intended to discuss the proposal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Stressing the necessity of supporting the Ukrainian power grid, Macron announced that further discussions regarding energy assistance would take place between officials in Washington, Paris and Kyiv.
Beyond security matters, Macron had previously indicated his intention to work toward easing tariff relations between France and the United States. He noted that bilateral discussions had begun prior to the summit in New York and would continue in the coming days to build on progress made during the meeting.
