Piura schools instructed to follow student safety rules

The Piura Ombudsman Office urged local schools to enforce regional rules banning outdoor events in high heat and preparing remote classes for extreme rain.

Piura schools instructed to follow student safety rules

The Piura Ombudsman Office called on educational institutions to comply with two directives from the Regional Directorate of Education of Piura protecting students.

The regulations aim to safeguard students against high temperatures and maintain learning continuity during potential climate emergencies. Officials released the guidelines to protect children's health across the region.

Ban on parades and mass gatherings

The first directive strictly bans school civic parades, street processions, anniversary parties, graduation events, and other mass extracurricular activities. Regional education officials established the prohibition to prevent lost class hours and protect students from exposure to solar radiation.

The second directive targets public schools with infrastructure rated as very high risk. These institutions must work with their Local Educational Management Unit to set up adapted distance learning strategies if extreme rain triggers an emergency.

Rights protection and compliance monitoring

Walter Galecio Gonzales, chief of the Piura Ombudsman Office, said the rules protect children's fundamental rights to education, health, and personal integrity. He said schools and authorities must implement the measures quickly, prioritizing the best interest of the child to ensure safe educational conditions.

The Ombudsman Office urged school directors, Local Educational Management Units, and regional education officials to implement and supervise the measures. The office added that it will conduct supervisory inspections throughout Piura to verify compliance and guarantee safe, high-quality education for all students.
