The National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) ex officio initiated a preliminary investigation into the media advertising about the World Cup Qatar 2022. The investigation is in charge of the Technical Secretariat of the Commission for the Control of Unfair Competition (CCD).
Through a statement, Indecopi specified that they have already requested information on the announcements related to the World Cup that have been broadcast. This with the aim of “verifying its veracity” and supervising compliance with the provisions of the Unfair Competition Suppression Law for the benefit of consumers.
“It is important to specify that the CCD constantly monitors all the advertising that is disseminated in the market” to guarantee that it respects the rules of commercial advertising, says Indecopi. They also stressed that “The dissemination of advertising for products or services with false allegations constitutes a hoax. or not supported by suitable evidence that proves its veracity”.
In this sense, they emphasized that providers or advertisers must ensure that they have the support for the advertising that spread The Commission for the Control of Unfair Competition may initiate, if applicable, administrative sanctioning procedures. If the authority finds violations, it could impose fines from up to 700 ITU (S/ 3 million 220,000).
