Portugal's public sector pension fund Caixa Geral de Aposentações has begun notifying 2,937 recently retired civil servants that their monthly payouts will be reduced.
The state-run pension provider began issuing notifications to affected retirees after discovering an error in the calculation of pension amounts awarded over recent months. Retirees were caught by surprise when informed that their actual statutory entitlement is lower than the amounts currently being paid into their bank accounts.

The reduction comes despite many of the affected workers having chosen to continue working beyond 40 years of service specifically to boost their final retirement benefits.

In statements to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, Caixa Geral de Aposentações admitted that a lapse in the parameterization of its information system caused the overpayments. The agency stated that the technical oversight led to pensions being calculated above the rates established by current legislation.
According to the pension fund, the calculation error affected pensions granted between May and August 2026. The agency confirmed that 2,937 individual retirement files were affected during this four-month window.
Public Sector Pension Scheme
Caixa Geral de Aposentações is the public institution responsible for managing pension schemes for Portuguese civil servants and state employees. The fund handles retirement, disability, and survivor pensions for workers across government institutions and public administration.
Under Portuguese public sector pension rules, civil servants who extend their careers beyond 40 years of service can receive higher statutory replacement rates. Many public employees choose to defer retirement to maximize their monthly income, making the unexpected downward revisions particularly impactful for recent retirees.
Reporting and Next Steps
The calculation errors were reported by Lisbon-based daily newspaper Correio da Manhã following statements provided directly by the pension provider. Caixa Geral de Aposentações has begun contacting each affected pensioner individually to communicate the adjusted amounts.
