Athens Stock Exchange Rises as FTSE Russell Review Begins

The Athens Stock Exchange rose on Friday, August 21, as investors turned their attention to preliminary index rebalancing figures from global index provider FTSE Russell.

Trading took place under an atmosphere of heightened caution, driven by signals from international equity markets and upcoming structural changes to Greek benchmark indices.

The benchmark General Index gained 0.63 percent during the Friday session to reach 2,615.94 points by mid-day. Intraday trading saw the index fluctuate between a low of 2,601.20 points and a high of 2,617.72 points.

Market data shows the General Index must gain at least 0.92 percent by the close of trading to reach its peak for the year and avoid a weekly overall loss. The current peak of 2,629 points remains the highest level of the year for the benchmark.

FTSE Russell Index Rebalancing

Global index provider FTSE Russell released its first indicative data on Friday for the semi-annual restructuring of its indices. Final modifications to the index compositions will be announced on September 4 and will take full effect following the close of the trading session on September 18.

This review marks the final index restructuring for Greece under its classification as an emerging market. The country is preparing for an official market status upgrade to developed market standing, a transition that alters how international institutional funds allocate investment capital to Greek listed companies.

FTSE Russell classifies international financial markets based on economic development, regulatory frameworks, and market liquidity. A promotion from emerging to developed market status places a nation's equity market among established global financial hubs, attracting benchmark tracking funds while adjusting capital flows from emerging market investment vehicles.

Global Market Pressures

Domestic equity trading in Athens faced headwinds from broader international market volatility amid a quiet local news agenda. A surge in US Treasury bond yields alongside elevated global crude oil prices rekindled concerns regarding persistent inflation, putting downward pressure on investor sentiment.

Rising US Treasury yields typically increase borrowing costs globally and lower the relative appeal of higher-risk equities compared to government bonds. At the same time, high crude oil prices elevate transport and manufacturing costs, feeding broader inflationary pressures across international economies.

The pressure on European equities was partially cushioned by a weakening US dollar and steady performances in equity futures contracts. These international market supports provided limited stability for trading on Athinon Avenue during the session.

The Athens Stock Exchange, situated on Athinon Avenue, serves as the primary securities exchange in Greece. Market participants now look ahead to the final rebalancing announcement on September 4 to assess the official weighting shifts for Greek shares.
