MakeUseOf editor Kanika Gogia has identified key hidden Android settings that reduce smartphone distractions without requiring complex software modifications. Writing for the technology website, Gogia explained that altering specific system preferences made daily device usage significantly more convenient.
Her primary recommendation is preventing the mobile operating system from automatically placing icons for newly downloaded applications directly onto the primary home screen.
To address system responsiveness, Gogia reduced built-in system animations that can create artificial delays during navigation. Modifying these parameters requires opening the About Phone section within system settings and tapping the OS build number entry seven times. This procedure unlocks a hidden menu called Developer Options, where users can turn off animation effects completely.

In addition to interface adjustments, Gogia advised disabling background Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning features. When these settings remain active, Android devices continue scanning for nearby wireless networks and Bluetooth accessories even after users turn off the main Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles.
Wireless scanning functions are designed into modern mobile operating systems to maintain high-precision location tracking and enable seamless connectivity with nearby smart devices. Location-based services use these signals alongside satellite GPS positioning to determine device coordinates, though constant background scanning consumes system resources.
Gogia also streamlined her device notifications by stopping app stores, food delivery platforms, and commercial services from sending promotional alerts and marketing offers. Additionally, the specialist recommended turning off the option titled Show recommended apps to maintain a minimalist user interface.
Mobile push notifications allow applications to deliver real-time messages, alerts, and updates to a device screen even when the app is not actively open. While essential for communication tools, marketing notifications from commercial services are frequently cited by user experience researchers as a major source of digital distraction.
Impact on phone performance
Reflecting on the results, Gogia noted that tweaking these hidden settings did not increase overall battery life or improve processing performance. However, she observed that the overall changes successfully reduced how often the smartphone distracted her during everyday activities.
Separately, technology website How-To Geek recently warned computer users about hardware operational risks, noting that accidentally pressing a computer power button can cause immediate loss of unsaved work. The publication added that holding the power button down for several seconds forces a complete hardware shutdown.
On desktop and laptop computers, the physical power button interacts directly with system firmware and power management software to manage device sleep, hibernation, and shutdown routines. Unsaved data held in volatile system memory is lost if electrical power is abruptly cut before files are written to storage drives.
