The World Health Organization has called for stronger tick bite prevention after the United States recorded a case of the rare Bourbon virus, RIA Novosti reported.
Pan American Health Organization representative Sebastian Oliel advised citizens to follow local sanitary and epidemiological recommendations for tick bite prevention, especially when visiting areas where ticks live. He said the disease is rare and most recorded cases have been identified in the United States.
Bourbon virus symptoms and lack of vaccine
Oliel added that the virus is particularly dangerous because no vaccine currently exists for it. Symptoms of the illness include fever, weakness, headache, body aches and pains, nausea, vomiting, and a rash.
Earlier, the Russian health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor warned that a new peak in tick activity is expected at the end of August.
