A new peak in tick activity will begin in late August and continue into early September, Russia's consumer health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement to RIA Novosti.

Rospotrebnadzor urged Russians to follow personal prevention measures, noting that the risk of contracting dangerous tick-borne infections remains high.

What to do if bitten

If a tick is found attached to the skin, it should be carefully removed with tweezers or a special tool, the bite site treated with antiseptic, and the person should seek medical attention immediately.

Rospotrebnadzor also said earlier that so-called "nanoticks", rumored to be attacking Russians, do not exist. The agency said these are not a new species but nymphs, the young stage of ixodid ticks.
