US Demands Allies Join Economic Campaign Against Iran

The United States announced a new economic offensive against Iran on Thursday, calling on allies and China to join a sanctions campaign aimed at weakening the regime in Tehran. Washington stated that it intends to prioritize economic measures and sanctions to avoid a resumption of military operations at this stage.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned foreign nations against continuing commercial relations with Tehran as the administration prepares to intensify financial restrictions. Writing on X, Bessent stated that any country maintaining ties with Iran would send its own economy into oblivion, regardless of whether those links were maintained voluntarily or deliberately ignored. Speaking to CNBC, he added that nations choosing not to support the American strategy would be considered to be against the United States.

Further details regarding the new economic restrictions are expected early next week. Bessent is scheduled to outline the upcoming American measures during a press conference on Monday.

New Phase of Economic Pressure

Vice President J.D. Vance explained that the United States has entered a new phase of the conflict in which economic pressure represents the most effective tool available to Washington. Vance also noted that Iran is likely to attempt to employ economic countermeasures against the United States in response.

The latest announcement follows earlier actions by Washington to tighten sanctions against Tehran. On Thursday, American authorities unveiled measures targeting a financial network operating for Hezbollah in Lebanon due to its connections with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. President Donald Trump had previously promised to launch the most crushing economic operation ever undertaken against Iran, at a time when military options are more constrained and American public opinion remains opposed to further armed conflict.

Role of China and Regional Trade

A central question surrounding the efficacy of the sanctions strategy is the response of China, which remains Iran's primary economic partner and a major purchaser of Iranian crude oil. Bessent called on Beijing to get in line with the campaign, as Washington seeks to bring down the Iranian regime through maximum economic pressure.

Reactions among other regional and global powers remain mixed. The United Arab Emirates announced that it is suspending all commercial trade and financial transactions with Iran. Conversely, Turkey and Russia continue to maintain substantial economic ties with Tehran.

Economic Impact on Both Nations

The escalation in financial measures comes as both Iran and the United States navigate broader economic challenges. Iran's economy, already strained by decades of international sanctions, has been further weakened by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the United States is dealing with domestic economic pressures related to the conflict. These include persistent inflation, fluctuations in gasoline prices, and elevated borrowing costs for the US Department of the Treasury.
