New Democracy's support climbed to 30.6% in a new opinion poll, gaining two percentage points after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair, according to a survey by polling company GPO presented on the main news bulletin of Greek broadcaster STAR.
Alexis Tsipras's party, ELAS, stayed in second place on 16%, up nearly a point from the previous survey. PASOK came third with 12.8%, while the party led by Maria Karystianou collapsed to 3.6%, having lost almost seven percentage points within a few months.
GPO analyst Antonis Papargyris presented the figures, which he said captured the new political landscape taking shape after the summer break and ahead of national elections.
Mitsotakis has served as prime minister since 2019 as leader of New Democracy, the governing centre-right party. His speech at the Thessaloniki fair is traditionally used by Greek prime ministers each year to set out the government's economic policy agenda.
Tsipras served as prime minister from 2015 to 2019 at the head of the left-wing Syriza party before founding ELAS, a separate political vehicle. Syriza itself was also measured in the poll, well behind ELAS.
Karystianou rose to national prominence as a leading voice for the families of victims of the 2023 Tempi train disaster before entering politics with her own movement, Elpida gia tin Dimokratia, or Hope for Democracy.
Voting intention
On the voting intention measure, New Democracy stood at 25.8%, up 0.8 points on the party's score in June. ELAS was second on 13.5%, up 0.3 points, while PASOK held third place on 10.8%.
Further down the ranking came Elliniki Lysi on 7.6%, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) on 7.4%, Plefsi Eleftherias on 4.1%, Foni Logikis on 3.1%, Elpida gia tin Dimokratia on 3%, Mera25 on 1.8%, Nea Aristera on 1.2%, Syriza on 1.1% and Niki on 1%.
Vote estimate
On the vote estimate measure, which GPO also compared with its June survey, New Democracy rose to 30.6% from 28.6%. ELAS climbed to 16% from 15.1%, and PASOK edged up to 12.8% from 12.4%.
Elliniki Lysi followed on 9%, ahead of KKE on 8.8%, Plefsi Eleftherias on 4.9% and Foni Logikis on 3.7%. Karystianou's Elpida gia tin Dimokratia fell sharply to 3.6%, down from 10.5% in June. Mera25 stood at 2.1%, Nea Aristera at 1.4%, Syriza at 1.3% and Niki at 1.2%.
Views on the party programs
The same poll asked respondents to judge the economic programs the party leaders presented at the Thessaloniki fair. A total of 44.6% said they considered Mitsotakis's program to be costed and realistic.
Only 20.4% said the same of the program presented by Tsipras and ELAS, against 68.4% who said it was neither realistic nor properly costed. PASOK's program fared only slightly better, with 24.9% calling it realistic against 58.6% who disagreed.
