Swedish music platform Spotify announced on Tuesday that it will introduce a new label next month to identify artist identities generated by artificial intelligence.
Starting in mid-September, the AI Persona label will appear on select artist profiles to notify listeners that a profile identity may have been created by generative software rather than representing a real human being, according to a company statement cited by news agency EFE.

Spotify stated that listeners must be able to trust that the artist behind a track is genuinely who they claim to be, describing authenticity as crucial in the generative AI era. The company added that the new feature forms part of an effort to make the platform more transparent and reliable.
Algorithmic recommendation policy
The label follows previous transparency tools launched by the company, including Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, AI Credits for track creation details, and Artist Profile Protection.
By default, Spotify will not include music from AI Personas in its editorial playlists or algorithmic recommendations. The company explained that while artists should have creative freedom to choose how they present themselves, Spotify programming focuses on giving visibility to real musicians building professional careers in the industry.
Verification and appeal process
Creators can self-declare their profiles as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists. However, the platform confirmed it will not rely solely on voluntary declarations.
Spotify will also analyze artist profiles to identify names and images that appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities. The review process will initially target accounts reaching specific audience thresholds so the labels cover the vast majority of profiles visited by users.
Profiles tagged by Spotify review team will receive advance notification, allowing artists to accept the label or submit an appeal. Listeners will also have the option to flag profiles they believe represent AI Personas.
