With four goals in 15 minutes, Bayern Munich crushes Benfica and sets foot in the knockout stages of the Champions League

The Portuguese held the Bavarian steamroller at home until the 70th minute, when the visiting feast began.

Bayern Munich, who had beaten Dinamo Kiev 5-0 in their previous Champions League match, continued in roller mode by crushing Benfica (0-4) this Wednesday in Lisbon, on the third round of Group E of the League of Champions.

In the standings, the German team widened the difference at the head of the group, with five points more than their rival on Wednesday, second.

Hours before, FC Barcelona won by the minimum at the Camp Nou against Dinamo (1-0). The Catalans are third with three points, two more than the Ukrainians, bottom.

After numerous occasions, Leroy Sané advanced the Bavarians with a great direct free from 25 meters (minute 70), before the Brazilian Everton scored an own goal in 80.

The Polish Robert Lewandowski signed up for the festival with his fifth goal in this Champions League (82 minutes), placing himself in second position in the scorers’ table. Sané, the man who opened the can, would close it with a second goal in 85.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men, absent from the bench due to a flu-like infection, made a good first half, full of rhythm but without finding the goal.

As the minutes passed, and despite his evident dominance, the muniqueses crashed time after time against a compact block of a Benfica that arrived at the game without conceding a single goal in the Champions League.

The referee, after consulting with the VAR, ruled out two goals to Lewandowski and Thomas Müller, by hand and offside respectively.

Despite this, Bayern maintain their average of close to five goals per game this season.

Bayern’s last European defeat away from home dates back to a 3-0 defeat against PSG on the first date of the 2017/18 Champions League, a record series that is already 20 games.
