Sony may delay all-digital PlayStation due to Xbox strategy

Sony may delay its all-digital PlayStation shift by up to two years as Microsoft weighs keeping disc drives in future Xbox hardware.

Sony may delay all-digital PlayStation due to Xbox strategy

Sony Interactive Entertainment may delay its plans for a fully digital PlayStation ecosystem by one to two years following reports that rival console maker Microsoft intends to retain physical disc drives in its next-generation Xbox hardware.

Internal discussions within Microsoft indicate that the company is evaluating hardware options that include physical disc support for its upcoming system, currently codenamed Project Helix.

Project Helix disc drive rumors

According to a report published by Eurogamer Spain, Microsoft is considering full compatibility for physical game discs on Project Helix. The report suggests that PlayStation leadership is concerned about handing Microsoft a competitive advantage in the gaming market if Xbox continues to support physical media while PlayStation goes digital-only.

Industry expectations previously pointed toward Sony establishing a completely digital PlayStation ecosystem by the end of 2028. However, reports indicate that Sony may now push back its complete phase-out of optical disc drives until 2029 or 2030 to remain competitive with Microsoft.

PlayStation digital transition timeline

Microsoft may also release Project Helix as an entire series of gaming devices rather than a single flagship console. Offering multiple hardware options, including models with optical drives and disc-free digital editions, would allow Microsoft to expand its digital software sales while simultaneously retaining physical game releases for buyers who want them.

Sony, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, have been rival manufacturers in the home video game console market since Microsoft entered the industry with the original Xbox in 2001. Current generation platforms, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, launched with optical disc drives capable of playing physical game media, alongside lower-cost digital editions. While digital downloads and subscription services have represented a growing share of industry revenue, physical media remains widely used by players who trade in games, buy pre-owned software, or collect physical boxed copies.

According to preliminary details, Project Helix is expected to launch in approximately two years. Because hardware strategies often evolve during development, plans at both Microsoft and Sony could change before the next generation of video game consoles is officially released to consumers.
