Alexander Dzhakoniya of Russian telecommunications company MegaFon has warned that high display brightness can rapidly drain smartphone batteries and cause overheating.
Speaking in an interview with news outlet RT, the head of the consumer equipment research and testing centre at MegaFon explained how display settings impact daily power consumption.
Dzhakoniya noted that energy consumption rises significantly during resource-intensive activities such as watching videos, operating satellite navigation, playing mobile games, and reading text on screen.
The choice of display technology also plays a crucial role in overall autonomy. On organic light-emitting diode screens, commonly known as OLED displays, power consumption depends directly on the image displayed. Because of how the technology operates, light-colored interfaces generally demand more energy than dark themes.
OLED screens feature individual pixels that emit their own light, meaning dark pixels consume minimal power while bright white pixels draw maximum current. MegaFon is one of the largest mobile network operators in Russia, providing cellular services and testing mobile consumer hardware.
Screen brightness and device temperature
Dzhakoniya advised against setting display brightness to maximum levels continuously. He explained that the primary concern with maximum brightness is not only battery discharge, but also device heating.
Elevated operating temperatures can negatively affect battery health over the long term. However, Dzhakoniya added that briefly increasing display brightness while outside on a sunny day is completely safe for the device.
For everyday usage, the expert recommended enabling automatic or adaptive brightness regulation. This feature automatically adjusts screen illumination based on ambient light conditions.
Dzhakoniya stated that if the screen is clearly visible at a setting of 40 to 60 percent, increasing brightness to 100 percent without necessity has no practical purpose.
Battery saving steps for Android devices
Earlier advice offered to Android smartphone owners outlined additional measures to prolong overall device lifespan. Gadgets will run longer between charges if users disable certain Google features that run in the background.
