Russian offensive on Kyiv would take years, analyst says

Open source intelligence analyst Clément Molin says a new Russian ground offensive against Kyiv from Belarus is practically impossible and would take years.

Writing on the social media platform X, Molin stated that Ukraine has heavily fortified its northern border, eliminating the element of surprise that Russian forces relied on during their initial invasion in 2022.

Open source intelligence, commonly referred to as OSINT, involves analyzing public satellite imagery, video footage, and social media data to evaluate military movements and defenses. Belarus, which borders Ukraine to the north, previously allowed Moscow to use its territory as a launching pad for the assault on the Ukrainian capital at the start of the full scale war.

Northern defense lines and terrain barriers

Molin noted that Ukrainian defensive lines and barbed wire now begin directly at the northern border. Around the city of Chernihiv, Ukrainian forces have constructed a massive main defense line, supported by two smaller defensive lines in front of the city and three additional lines positioned closer to the border.

Major preparatory works are also underway near Chernobyl and to the northeast of Zhytomyr. Ukrainian troops are clearing large swathes of forest to deploy barbed wire, set up physical barriers, and lay extensive minefields along roadways.

Chernihiv and Zhytomyr are strategic northern regions guarding the approaches to Kyiv, while Chernobyl lies in the marshy border zone near Belarus. Molin explained that difficult terrain, including vast forests, swamps, and mined roads, would prevent any rapid military advance, forcing any potential Russian ground campaign toward Kyiv to drag on for years.

Risk of Belarusian escalation

While a major drive on the capital remains unlikely, Molin suggested that small scale Russian attacks could occur in the northern Sumy region and eastern Chernihiv region. However, he emphasized that such localized operations would fail to produce strategic results without the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of additional troops.

Molin also warned that Ukraine could launch direct strikes against targets in Belarus if Russian forces attempt to launch a second invasion from Belarusian territory. He added that the government in Minsk is completely unprepared for such a retaliatory scenario.

Broad Kremlin objectives and eastern combat

The assessment comes alongside warnings from Ukrainian officials regarding Russia's wider strategic goals. Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara stated previously in comments reported by Ukrainian news agency UNIAN that Moscow does not intend to limit its ambitions to capturing individual Ukrainian regions.

Khmara warned that Russia aims to gain control over the entire country. He described the conflict as existential for Ukraine, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin views the war as part of a project to rebuild the Russian Empire and seeks the complete destruction of Ukrainian statehood. Khmara added that the Kremlin interprets any territorial or political concessions as proof that its pressure tactics are succeeding.

Meanwhile, military analysts at the Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian troops are building up personnel and military hardware near Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine, likely in preparation for intensified offensive operations. The Washington-based think tank noted in its front line assessment on August 29 that Ukrainian forces are conducting counterattacks across several sectors, achieving confirmed advances near Dobropillia.

The Institute for the Study of War also observed that Russian forces are striking Ukrainian logistical routes and river crossings along the Oskil and Siverskyi Donets rivers. Analysts indicated that these logistics strikes may form part of the preparatory stage for a broader Russian offensive in the east.
