A court in Karachay-Cherkessia has convicted a local man of publicly rehabilitating Nazism after he posted comments in open social network communities denying Nazi war crimes.
The regional department of the Investigative Committee of Russia announced that the court ordered the defendant to pay a fine of 400,000 rubles and prohibited him from administering websites for 1.5 years.

Social media posts and evidence
According to findings established in court, the man published comments in public online groups in 2020. The posts contained a denial of facts established by the judgment of the International Military Tribunal for the trial and punishment of the major war criminals of the European Axis countries, as well as approval of the crimes specified in the ruling. Investigators noted that the statements were accessible to an unrestricted number of social media users.
Authorities confirmed his involvement through evidence gathered during the investigation, including witness statements, technical inspections of electronic equipment, and additional case materials. He was found guilty under Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which covers public rehabilitation of Nazism.
Legal framework and historical background
Karachay-Cherkessia is a federal republic located in the North Caucasus region of southern Russia. The Investigative Committee of Russia functions as the country's primary federal authority responsible for criminal prosecutions and major law enforcement investigations.
The International Military Tribunal was established in Nuremberg, Germany, following World War II to try political and military leaders of Nazi Germany. The landmark proceedings, held from 1945 to 1946, formally documented Axis war crimes and established principles of international justice.
Enacted in 2014, Article 354.1 of the Russian Criminal Code penalises the public rehabilitation of Nazism. The law sets penalties including substantial fines and bans on specific public activities for individuals who deny tribunal rulings or spread statements approving Nazi crimes.
