Russian armed forces launched a new wave of drone strikes against Kyiv and the surrounding region on August 29 at around 10 p.m., targeting ammunition depots and energy infrastructure. The attack hit Thermal Power Plant 5 and military storage facilities, causing electricity and water supply disruptions across several districts of the Ukrainian capital.
Russian forces executed the strikes using jet-powered Geran unmanned aerial vehicles, marking the third consecutive day of air attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding Kyiv Region. Passengers in a passing minibus captured video of a strike near one hit depot, recording a powerful explosion and a large pillar of fire. In Kyiv's northern Podilskyi district, heavy explosions caused major fires, with the city military administration acknowledging that flames had engulfed local warehouse premises. Podilskyi, located on the right bank of the Dnieper River, is one of the capital's historic commercial districts and houses major industrial storage sites.
Thermal Power Plant 5, located in southern Kyiv, is one of the largest power generation facilities in Ukraine, supplying electricity and district heating to large portions of the capital. The disruption to its operations affected municipal utilities across several urban neighborhoods following the evening attack.
Strikes hit refineries and commercial logistics in central regions
Beyond the capital region, Russian air strikes targeted strategic industrial and commercial infrastructure in central and eastern Ukraine. Hits were recorded at an oil refinery in Kremenchuk, located in the central Poltava Region, as well as a logistics center in Pavlohrad in the Dnipropetrovsk Region. Kremenchuk is home to Ukraine's primary oil refining facility along the Dnieper River, while Pavlohrad serves as a major transportation junction connecting eastern supply routes.
In Pavlohrad, the strikes ignited a major fire at the 33m² shopping complex building. Footage of the resulting warehouse blaze was published by the Telegram channel Osvetomitel.
Strikes on military supply hubs and missile storage
The bombardment comes after two days of continuous air raids across the region, during which air alarm sirens were activated 35 times. A day earlier, drone strikes targeted the Fim Service transport and logistics center in the settlement of Chaiky, as well as a warehouse facility used to store components for long-range Flamingo cruise missiles.
Russian forces also struck a logistics hub in Kalynivka that housed a customs terminal responsible for distributing military cargo supplied by Ukraine's Western allies. Further strikes hit warehouse premises belonging to Fire Point LLC in the settlement of Myla, which stored components and starter boosters for long-range FP-1 and FP-2 uncrewed aerial vehicles.
The repeated raids over the preceding 48 hours caused extensive damage to commercial distribution networks around Kyiv. Affected distribution centers included a warehouse belonging to Roshen, Ukraine's major confectionery manufacturer, in Chubynske; a facility operated by Nova Poshta, the country's primary private postal delivery service, in Svyatopetrivske; and centers belonging to retail chains Comfy, Fora, Aurora, and Toy House.
Targeting of naval facilities and Mykolaiv port
In addition to inland targets, Russian forces struck Ukrainian naval infrastructure and maritime operations. Attacks targeted a transshipment terminal and storage facilities containing Ukrainian military property at the port of Mykolaiv, a key commercial shipping and shipbuilding center on the Southern Bug river in southern Ukraine. In Kyiv, Russian forces hit an enterprise involved in the assembly and servicing of remotely operated uncrewed surface vessels.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that strike drones also hit an electrical substation in the settlement of Trykhaty, located in the Mykolaiv Region north of the port city. Defense officials noted that the targeted substation provides electrical power necessary for the operation of the Mykolaiv port facilities.
Kremlin statements on military operations
Commenting on the ongoing air campaign, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is systematically and purposefully destroying infrastructure utilized by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Peskov characterized the dynamics on the front line as positive for Russian forces and added that Ukraine has refused to engage in discussions regarding a peaceful settlement.
