At least 13 people died and four were injured after a public transit minivan collided with a parked trailer in Cusco region in southeastern Peru. Cusco police chief Colonel Carlos Guizado reported the crash to local media on Saturday.

The accident happened during the early morning on an internal route in Peru. The public vehicle was traveling between the town of Chalhuahuacho in Apurimac department and Arequipa, the capital of Arequipa region.

Guizado said the victims included both children and adults. Emergency workers transferred the four injured people urgently to a hospital in Arequipa.

Guizado added that police are still investigating the cause of the crash. According to initial police findings, the minivan driver failed to notice the trailer stranded on the road due to apparent mechanical problems, hitting the rear of the heavy vehicle head on.
