Turkey earthquake death toll rises to 1,651

The death toll from the earthquake in southeastern Turkey has risen to 1,651, with more than 11,000 injured. According to TASS, this was stated on the air of local television by the head of the Ministry of Health of the Republic, Fahrettin Koca.

“So far, 1,651 people have died and 11,119 have been injured as a result of the earthquake in Kahramanmaras. 3471 buildings were destroyed,” he said.

The minister noted that since the first earthquake, 147 repeated tremors have been recorded in the region. “Severe destruction has been reported in 10 provinces,” he added.

According to Koca, in the province of Hatay in the city of Iskenderun, a state hospital was destroyed, the building of another large hospital in the city was seriously damaged. “There are patients and employees under the rubble of the destroyed hospital, and rescue efforts are underway,” the minister said. Due to the lack of places in medical institutions, the victims are sent for treatment to other cities. For this, as Koca said, aviation is actively used.

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 occurred on Monday in the province of Kahramanmaras in southeastern Turkey. Later, another earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck Turkey.
