Owners of aging Android smartphones can make their device interface significantly more responsive by reducing system animation durations in hidden operating system settings, according to technology publication MakeUseOf.
While adjusting animation settings does not boost the underlying hardware performance of a device, journalists at the portal reported that the tweak effectively reduces delays when opening applications and switching between screens.
The hidden adjustment is located within the Developer options section of the Android operating system. Users can unlock this menu by navigating to the phone information area within device settings and pressing the build number entry seven times in succession.
Once the developer menu is activated, users must locate three specific parameters: Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale. Specialists noted that these parameters are set to a default value of 1x, but replacing them with 0.5x allows visual effects to play twice as fast.
Speeding up older Android hardware
The authors explained that while system animations can be turned off completely, doing so causes transitions between different screens to appear overly abrupt.
