Moscow will experience unseasonably warm weather with temperatures reaching up to 27 degrees Celsius on Knowledge Day on September 1, according to weather forecasters.
Alexander Ilyin, a specialist at the Meteo forecasting centre, informed regional publication Podmoskovye Segodnya that the first day of September would bring true heat to the Russian capital rather than basic warmth. He added that small amounts of rain are anticipated during the daytime hours before temperatures drop at night.
Knowledge Day is a public holiday celebrated every year on September 1 across Russia, marking the official opening of the academic school year. Millions of students return to primary and secondary schools following the summer vacation, with families attending outdoor ceremonies and traditional assemblies across Moscow.
Cooler weekend conditions in the Moscow region
The heat forecast for the start of September follows a cooler final weekend of summer in the Moscow region. Temperatures across the region are expected to range between 16 and 22 degrees Celsius during the day on Saturday and Sunday, with nighttime levels cooling to 14 degrees Celsius. Forecasters expect clear weather without precipitation on Saturday, August 29, followed by up to two millimetres of rainfall on Sunday, August 30.
A sharper chill was forecast for the night leading into August 29, when temperatures in the Moscow region, also known as Podmoskovye, were expected to fall to 3 degrees Celsius. In the neighboring Kostroma region, located northeast of Moscow, forecasters warned of the first nighttime frosts of the season during the same overnight period.
Temperatures to climb ahead of school start
Weather conditions will begin to warm up rapidly at the start of the week. Thermometers are expected to show between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius during the night leading into Monday, August 31, before daytime temperatures rise to 25 degrees Celsius. Ilyin noted that light rain will fall during the day on August 31 as warm air moves across the region.
Temperatures will peak on Tuesday, September 1, reaching 27 degrees Celsius in Moscow. Light rain is predicted during the day, while nighttime temperatures following Knowledge Day will fall to between 12 and 17 degrees Celsius.
