Former Athens mayor Kostas Bakoyannis has warned that arrogance is an open secret within the Greek government during a television interview on Action24 this morning.
Asked whether arrogance exists within the ruling administration, Bakoyannis used a traditional Greek proverb, noting that while the public is fully aware of the problem, officials treat it as a hidden secret. He stated that arrogance is unfortunately often tied to and identified with the exercise of power.
Bakoyannis added that anyone who has held executive authority, including himself, must be two and three times more careful when exercising power.
Bakoyannis served as the mayor of Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, from 2019 to 2023. Action24 is a private Greek television channel that broadcasts national news and political discussion programs.
Athens local election plans
Addressing whether he will contest the municipality of Athens again in the next local elections, Bakoyannis left the option open, emphasizing that he has not yet made a definitive decision.
He pointed out that there are still two years remaining before the elections take place. Bakoyannis stated that he knows the city and the municipality very well, adding that governing Athens requires a strong stomach, heart, and mind, which he said align in his case.
He described seeking office again as a major personal decision that he must thoroughly discuss with his family before making any final commitment.
Criticism of Athens city management
Bakoyannis also criticized the current situation in Athens, arguing that the city is suffering from the direct consequences of indifference and abandonment by its current leaders.
He accused municipal leadership of maintaining a part-time perception of the municipality of Athens. He explained that some view the mayoralty merely as a stepping stone, a temporary station, or a vehicle for fulfilling personal political ambitions.
Bakoyannis concluded by warning that conditions in the Greek capital become more difficult with each passing year. He emphasized that managing the city requires a clear plan, proper organization, and above all, political will.
