Kenji Fujimori, son of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, said his removal from Congress plunged him into depression, and that his wife, Erika Muñoz, played a key role in helping him recover.
Fujimori spoke about his personal life in an interview with Cristian Rivero, describing how he met Muñoz at a gym during a particularly difficult period for his family.
How they met
Fujimori said he met Muñoz while attending spinning classes at a gym. At the time, the judicial process against his father, Alberto Fujimori, had just begun, and he recalled the atmosphere around him as especially tense.
He said their first interaction happened when Muñoz approached him and told him she was a huge supporter of his father, using the words "Chino, yo soy hincha a morir de tu viejo." Fujimori said the comment surprised him and immediately caught his interest.
The relationship developed over the following years. The couple began dating in 2009 and had a civil wedding on June 30, 2020. Fujimori also recalled that their first kiss, a brief peck, took place at his mother-in-law's apartment, where Muñoz had taken him during that early stage of their courtship.
Depression after leaving Congress
Fujimori said one of the hardest periods of his life came after he was barred from Congress. He said he remained emotionally affected and withdrew from news and anything related to his political life.
He recalled that after being removed from Congress, he stayed in bed and told himself that from then on he would follow zero news. In response, Muñoz encouraged him to resume everyday activities, including suggesting they go to the movies even during busy hours, despite his embarrassment at running into other people.
Fujimori said that during those outings, some people would approach him to comment on what he had done for his father. He described those moments as part of a recovery process in which his wife played a decisive role, saying Muñoz helped him sort through those negative thoughts.
