The Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) officially launched João Campos's candidacy for governor of Pernambuco on Saturday, August 1, during a convention at Clube Internacional do Recife.
The ticket was approved with Carlos Costa of the Republicanos party as candidate for vice governor, alongside Humberto Costa of the Workers' Party (PT) and Marília Arraes of the Democratic Labour Party (PDT) running for the two Senate seats.
Campos invokes his father's legacy
In his speech, the former Recife mayor referred to his father, Eduardo Campos, who died in a plane crash in 2014 while running for president. He said he would do what his father could not, reaching where his father did not manage to reach.
Campos also said he wants to open what he called a new era for Pernambuco, backing a project focused on economic development, job creation and restoring the state's leading role in Brazil's Northeast.
Federal government support
Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, also of the PSB, attended the event representing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the PT and reinforced the federal government's support for the candidacy. Senator Teresa Leitão of the PT also declared her support, saying the candidacy represents a project defending education and respect for people.
