Smartphone accessory manufacturer OtterBox has begun selling protective cases for the unreleased iPhone 18 Pro that list explicit compatibility with Apple's iPhone 17 Pro.

The retail packaging was spotted on store shelves at Best Buy by Bloomberg technology journalist Mark Gurman ahead of Apple's anticipated hardware unveiling.

Writing on social media on August 19, 2026, Gurman noted that OtterBox appeared to expect the iPhone 18 Pro to fit inside cases designed for the iPhone 17 Pro and vice versa. He added that Best Buy was displaying the inventory on store shelves early.

Gurman is a senior technology reporter for Bloomberg News who regularly covers Apple supply chain leaks. OtterBox, based in Fort Collins, Colorado, is a major producer of rugged protective phone enclosures. Retailers such as Best Buy frequently receive third-party accessories weeks in advance of major smartphone unveilings to prepare for launch day sales.

By printing dual model compatibility on its retail packaging, the accessory maker effectively indicates that cases for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro may be fully interchangeable.

Design expectations and chassis dimensions

The physical similarity suggested by the packaging aligns with earlier industry leaks indicating that Apple does not plan major structural or cosmetic redesigns for its next generation flagship handsets.

When smartphone manufacturers maintain identical exterior dimensions, button positions, and camera module layouts between consecutive product cycles, protective cases remain compatible across generations.

However, packaging details from accessory manufacturers do not constitute official confirmation of final device dimensions. Third-party case makers occasionally manufacture initial production runs based on preliminary supply chain schematics before official device announcements.

Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, California, traditionally unveils its new flagship smartphone lineups during an annual media event held every September.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max may prove to be an exception to the unchanged form factor. According to preliminary data, the larger Pro Max model will receive an expanded battery capacity, which could make its chassis thicker and heavier than its predecessor.

Previous supply chain disclosures

The discovery follows earlier disclosures regarding the upcoming handset generation. A cyberattack targeting a manufacturing partner of Apple previously exposed details regarding the camera system planned for the iPhone 18 Pro.

Separate reports also indicated that Apple might seek to reduce production costs on the display components for the iPhone 18 Pro Max model.

The complete iPhone 18 Pro smartphone series is expected to make its official debut in September 2026.
