Greek Armed Forces Donations Top €116m Since 2023

Donations to Greece's Ministry of National Defence have reached 116,821,231 euros since July 2023, with the largest annual total recorded so far this year, the ministry said.

Between January 1 and August 21, 2026, donations to the Armed Forces totalled 55,283,744 euros, contributed by 138 donors, according to ministry figures.

The ministry's data show the donations building steadily each year since the scheme began in the middle of 2023. From July to the end of that year, donations amounted to 298,075 euros. The total rose sharply to 23,191,177 euros in 2024, then to 38,048,235 euros in 2025, before reaching this year's figure of 55,283,744 euros as of August 21.

The ministry said the funds are helping to support the reform of the Armed Forces and improvements to their infrastructure.

Dendias on the role of donations

Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias has spoken about the significance of the donations to the Armed Forces, saying that Greece's national narrative has always rested on the institution of sponsorship.

Dendias said the Athenian Democracy would not have existed without sponsorship and the trierarchy, the ancient practice of wealthy citizens funding warships, and that this tradition of national benefaction continues through the centuries as a contribution from people who have succeeded in life and chosen to support their country at critical moments. He described the donations as a practical statement of support for the vision of a strong homeland.

Dendias also said that what matters is not only the act of giving itself but, above all, the example it sets.

How the donations are processed

Requests for donations to the Armed Forces are handled by the Donation Acceptance Department of the Ministry of National Defence, which coordinates the parties involved and manages the procedures for using and allocating the funds once they are received.
