Emperor penguins could vanish by 2100 as diminishing coastal sea ice renders their Antarctic breeding grounds uninhabitable, NASA Observatory research revealed on Wednesday.

Researchers at the agency analyzed satellite imagery to investigate how penguin colonies respond to changing ice conditions across the polar continent. The findings highlight severe threats facing the species, which is the largest bird in the penguin family.

Emperor penguins depend on coastal sea ice attached to the continental shoreline for reproduction, raising their chicks, and exchanging their plumage, the complete layer of feathers coating the bird. Replacing their feather coat is critical for survival, as birds lose their thermal insulation during moulting and cannot enter the freezing ocean to feed.

Antarctic sea ice coverage has shown a downward trend since 2016, a decline intensified by global warming and broader climate change. Coastal sea ice, also known as landfast ice, remains frozen directly against land. This stable ice platform shelters breeding colonies from rough ocean swells during polar winters.

Adaptation to shifting ice conditions

To survive deteriorating conditions, colonies have begun moving from their original habitats to establish temporary breeding sites near icebergs and coves. Scientists noted that this willingness to relocate demonstrates a greater capacity for adaptation than previously expected.

Grant Macdonald, a remote sensing scientist at Durham University who leads research into penguin reproduction and lifestyle, explained that relocating could offer temporary relief. Macdonald said the willingness to move may represent a useful adaptation as ocean temperatures warm and sea ice declines.

However, Macdonald warned that behavioral flexibility alone will not necessarily offset the long-term impacts of continuous sea ice loss. Researchers currently estimate that 66 emperor penguin colonies are scattered across Antarctica.

Durham University in England and NASA Earth Observatory use satellite remote sensing to monitor remote polar ecosystems. High-resolution satellite observation allows researchers to track penguin populations in isolated regions that remain difficult to reach on foot.

Conservation status and growing risks

Despite their observed capacity to relocate, climate change remains an ongoing threat to the species. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service officially listed emperor penguins as a threatened species in 2022.

In 2026, the International Union for Conservation of Nature also classified emperor penguins as threatened. Headquartered in Switzerland, the global conservation organization maintains the official Red List to monitor species extinction risks worldwide.
