Osiptel: 71.8% of fiber optic networks were set up by alternative operators in Latin America

The holder of the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel), Rafael Muente Schwarz, assured that, during the pandemic, the largest deployment of fiber optic networks for the home in Peru was carried out by new operating companies.

“The operators that deployed fiber optic networks to the home are not only the traditional ones, the entrants have also played a fundamental role. In our region, 71.8% of fiber optic network deployments to the home were implemented by alternative operators to the traditional ones ”, he said.

During his presentation at the Fiber panel, promoting the connection and transformation of the Fiber Connect Latam 2021 society, an international activity organized by the Fiber Broadband Association (FBA), Muente Schwarz emphasized the importance of generating optimal conditions for the execution of the investment and the installation of greater telecommunications infrastructure supported by fiber optics continue efficiently and at attractive costs, with the aim of reducing existing access gaps and expanding their use for more and more citizens.

“We must continue to promote greater efficiency in the deployment of infrastructure. Although it is developed through the private sector, it is important to share infrastructure, exchange information and coordinate private investment interests in our countries so that investment can move quickly and efficiently ”, he pointed out.

As implementation models, Muente recalled that the Public Private Associations (APP) schemes and the National Fiber Optic Backbone Network (RDNFO) were essential to reach all regions.

“There are 21 regional projects that join the backbone with levels of fiber optic technology that would allow us to deliver better quality and broadband characteristics that our towns require,” he said.

The data

  • In Peru there are more than 70,000 kilometers of fiber optics installed nationwide, according to an investigation by Osiptel regarding fiber optic, microwave and satellite transport networks issued in 2020.
  • According to a recent study published this year by the FBA Latam Chapter, the expansion of fiber optics for the home was the flagship product in the last two years due to the higher performance, reflected in the greater symmetry between download and upload speeds, lower delays , better quality of connectivity, among other attributes highly valued by users given the greater digitization of work, academic and health activities.
