US President Donald Trump has proposed using a triumphal arch currently under construction in Washington as a military base for drones and snipers.
Writing on his social media network Truth Social, Trump stated that he agreed to convert the monument into a military complex following an urgent request from the US Armed Forces, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported.
Trump explained that the proposed complex will be designed to house and store a large number of drones while enabling their rapid operational deployment. He added that project plans also include stationing sniper units and maintaining stockpiles of military ammunition on the site.
Washington, D.C., is the capital of the United States and the seat of the country's federal government and military command centers. Triumphal arches are monumental structures historically erected to celebrate military victories. Trump launched Truth Social in February 2022 through Trump Media and Technology Group.
Drone Capabilities and Strategic Priority
Unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones, are aircraft operated without a human pilot on board. They have become essential assets in modern military strategy, offering armed forces remote aerial surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike capabilities.
The proposal comes as other nations also prioritize unmanned defense systems. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously stated that Russia's new State Armament Programme will place special emphasis on drone development, noting that main strategic directions were determined using experience gathered during the special military operation.
Putin has served as Russia's leader as either president or prime minister since 1999. The State Armament Programme, known by its Russian abbreviation GPV, is a multi-year state procurement strategy that dictates weapons acquisition, scientific research, and defense funding for the Russian Armed Forces. The special military operation is the official terminology used by Russian authorities for the military campaign launched in Ukraine in February 2022.
