The peak moment of the eclipse will occur at 4:12 a.m. GMT on Friday, August 28, when the Moon reaches its deepest point inside the shadow projected by Earth. The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration puts the peak time at 4:13 a.m. UTC on August 28, a one-minute difference caused by rounding standard astronomical data rather than a conflict in timing.

Because of time zone differences, observers across much of North and South America will see the maximum eclipse during the night of Thursday, August 27. Observers in Europe and western Africa will see the peak in the early morning hours of Friday, August 28.

Lunar shadow depth and appearance

During maximum immersion, roughly 96 percent of the lunar disk will enter Earth's umbra, the central and darkest region of the shadow cast by our planet. A small strip of the Moon will remain outside the umbra, keeping the event officially classified as a partial eclipse rather than a total eclipse.

Despite that formal classification, astronomers say the event will visually resemble a total eclipse. Pat Hartigan, an astronomer at Rice University, highlighted to the Houston Chronicle that the event deserves special attention and described it as the spectacle of the summer due to how close the Moon will come to complete coverage.

The phenomenon often produces a Blood Moon effect, where the lunar surface turns copper or deep red. This coloration happens because sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere before reaching the Moon. The atmosphere filters out shorter blue light waves and bends longer red and orange wavelengths into the shadow zone.

NASA anticipates that the Moon will appear heavily darkened, with copper hues across the areas buried deepest in shadow. Because a small edge of the disk stays outside the umbra, the entire Moon will not turn uniformly red, and the final shading will depend on atmospheric conditions at the time of the event.

Viewing schedules in the United States and Mexico

In the United States, viewing times vary by local time zone. On the West Coast, observers in Los Angeles and across California will see the peak at 9:13 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, August 27. In the Mountain Time zone, the peak will arrive at 10:13 p.m.

Across Central Time, including Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, the peak will take place at 11:13 p.m. Central Time on Thursday. On the East Coast, observers in New York and Miami will watch the maximum eclipse shortly after midnight at 12:13 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday, August 28.

In Mexico, central regions including Mexico City and Guadalajara will reach peak eclipse around 10:13 p.m. local time on Thursday, August 27. In Monterrey and other northern regions, the peak will occur at 11:13 p.m. due to regional time zone differences and summer clock schedules.

For residents of Mexico City, the timing is favorable. The Moon will already be positioned high above the horizon for several hours before the peak, allowing viewers to monitor both the entry and exit phases of the eclipse if skies remain clear.

Timings across Spain and South America

Across mainland Spain, peak coverage will happen at approximately 6:13 a.m. Central European Summer Time on Friday, August 28. This early morning timing presents a viewing challenge, as the peak coincides with the onset of dawn and the Moon moving low toward the western horizon.

Spanish observers will need an unobstructed view of the western skyline to see the event. In some areas, early morning daylight may reduce contrast in the sky as the eclipse enters its final stages.

In South America, countries in the north and west will see the peak before midnight on Thursday, August 27. Peak immersion will take place at 11:13 p.m. local time in Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. In Venezuela, Bolivia, and Chile, the peak will occur shortly after midnight on Friday morning.

Further east, observers in Argentina and Uruguay will see the peak during the early morning of Friday, August 28. In Brazil, which spans multiple time zones, peak times will vary by state and city, with visibility depending on whether the Moon remains above the local horizon.

Visibility conditions and observation tips

While the universal time of maximum immersion is identical worldwide, viewing conditions depend on four key factors: the Moon being above the horizon, local darkness, cloud-free skies, and a clear line of sight.

Astronomers recommend that observers begin watching at least one hour before the peak and continue for one hour afterward. Starting early allows viewers to watch Earth's shadow gradually creep across the lunar surface rather than seeing only the peak moment.

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses do not emit harmful radiation and are completely safe to view with the naked eye without protective eyewear. Binoculars or a small telescope can help viewers see the boundary between the lit and shadowed parts of the surface, but special equipment is not required.
