At least 111 people have died and 87 others were injured after a powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on the morning of August 10, according to global news agencies citing official data.
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said the national government had deployed all its capabilities to protect lives, help affected communities and provide aid where needed. Speaking around midday local time, he said the top priority was rescuing people trapped under the rubble.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck at a depth of 107 kilometers near San Jose del Palmar in Choco, a sparsely populated province on Colombia's Pacific coast. Tremors were felt in the country's major cities.
Earlier this summer, on June 24, two earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela, killing more than 6,000 people and causing significant destruction.
