Chinese specialists are considering sending four-legged robots, known as robot dogs, to the future International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). The machines could help astronauts with patrolling, technical checks, scientific research and building infrastructure.
The concept was described by Chinese researchers in the journal Chinese Space Science and Technology. Under the plan, the four-legged robots would regularly survey the area around the base, moving over uneven terrain and past rocks and small obstacles better than wheeled vehicles.
Sample Collection and Base Construction
The robot dogs could also be tasked with collecting lunar soil and rock samples, exploring the surrounding area and assisting the crew during scientific experiments. One scenario under consideration involves three robots working alongside three astronauts, splitting tasks between them.
Later, the researchers envision assigning the robots heavier work, including building and maintaining a permanent settlement. They could potentially extract water ice and mineral resources, transport materials and help construct structures from local lunar material.

A Social Role Too
Automation could also extend to daily life at the base. The robots could theoretically monitor temperature and air quality, handle cleaning, tend to plants and even help prepare food.
The concept has an unexpected social side. The researchers propose equipping the robots with voice interfaces so they can talk with astronauts and serve as interactive helpers, saying this could ease the crew's psychological strain during long missions far from Earth.
Technical Hurdles Ahead
The main challenge is that autonomous operation on the Moon is far harder than on Earth, since most machine vision and navigation systems are trained on terrestrial data while the lunar surface differs in lighting, terrain, temperature and physical conditions. The robots will need specialized algorithms, datasets and additional training, and China and its ILRS partners will need their own communication and navigation infrastructure around the Moon.
The robot dogs are part of China's broader plan for the ILRS, whose basic infrastructure is expected to take shape by around 2035 and expand afterward, with a more developed network of lunar surface and orbital facilities envisioned by 2045. The Moon's south pole, where permanently shadowed craters may hold significant water ice, is expected to be a key area, potentially supplying water, oxygen and rocket fuel components to reduce the base's dependence on shipments from Earth.
