Mexican action thriller La Captura premieres globally on streaming platform Netflix on Friday, August 21, 2026. Titled Facing El Chapo for English-speaking audiences, the 91-minute feature dramatises the high-stakes operation in which military intelligence officers unexpectedly trapped cartel leader Joaquin El Chapo Guzman.
Directed by Chava Cartas from a script by Bernardo Esquinca, the film centers on Operation Black Swan, a real-life mission executed by the Mexican Navy in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Special forces officers Arturo Carmona and Hector Rosales encounter the country's most wanted criminal almost by accident and must secure him in territory controlled by his organization.
The production combines suspense and action with moral dilemmas as the officers try to keep Guzman in custody. Guarding the Sinaloa Cartel chief puts both officers and their families at risk, as Guzman attempts to regain his freedom through a combination of heavy financial bribes and violent threats.
Plot and character details
Alfonso Herrera stars as Arturo Carmona, a special forces and military intelligence officer who insists on following official protocols to hand Guzman over to authorities. Carmona remains committed to his duty even though he faces financial difficulties and needs money to support his family, turning down the vast sum offered by the drug lord. Herrera won the Ariel Award for Best Actor for El baile de los 41 and has appeared in Sense8, Ozark, Rebel Moon, and La casa de los espiritus. The actor shares updates on Instagram under the handle @ponchohd.

Although Rosales is Carmona's partner, he does not share the same moral code and is open to accepting Guzman's money to protect his family. Hernandez has appeared in productions such as Pedro Paramo, Bardo, Narcos: Mexico, and Contraataque.
Paola Fernandez portrays Isaura, Carmona's wife. In the film's trailer, Isaura mentions that she is pregnant and reminds Arturo about their financial struggles. Fernandez previously appeared in La Dona, Ojitos de Huevo, Amor de oficina, Technoboys, and Bizarro.
