A group of residents from Ceuta living in Madrid has organized a non-partisan, peaceful demonstration in the Spanish capital to demand urgent government solutions to a month-long migration crisis.
Javier, one of the primary organizers of the rally, said the movement originated from a citizen proposal launched on social media by Fran Paul. He noted that the initiative quickly gained traction among locals and was joined by civic groups including Por Ceuta.
The demonstration has two principal objectives, according to Javier. The first is to secure immediate government intervention so that Ceuta can return to normal after more than a month of ongoing disruption. The second is to establish long-term structural protections to prevent similar border emergencies in the future.
Official figures for the current crisis indicate that tens of thousands of migrants have entered the territory. Javier contrasted this with a previous major border disruption in 2021, when 15,000 people crossed into the city, warning that both Ceuta and Melilla require permanent safeguards to secure their future.
Criticism of central government response
Organisers have sharply criticized the central government for what they describe as a delayed and ineffective response to the border situation. Javier pointed out that ministers took three weeks after the onset of the crisis to propose a single unified command structure.
He added that government proposals to establish temporary housing centers were introduced without local consensus, causing further frustration. The organizer stressed that the central administration lacked the initial speed required to contain the immediate impact of the migration influx.
Addressing debate over the potential politicization of the demonstration, Javier stated that any initiative seeking urgent aid for the city is positive. However, he emphasized that the organizing committee explicitly distances itself from any attempt by political parties to instrumentalize the event for partisan interests.
Conditions inside Ceuta and institutional demands
Families remaining in Ceuta are experiencing a mixture of uncertainty, indignation, and abandonment, Javier reported. Having spent the initial weeks of the crisis in the city himself, he described an atmosphere marked by deep anger and sadness among residents who simply wish to regain normal daily life.
While acknowledging that the central government has made significant investments in recent years, Javier argued that major crises highlight an ongoing strategic neglect. He called on national authorities to fortify key international frameworks, including the European Union land border, the Schengen passport-free zone, and NATO military protections.
Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish autonomous cities located on the North African coast, sharing the European Union's only land borders with Morocco. Javier noted that rhetoric and actions originating from the neighboring nation generate ongoing social and economic instability that the enclave cannot continue to bear.
Organising committee and rally plans
The Madrid rally is being coordinated by a core committee of 10 to 12 Ceuta residents with diverse political views, supported by a broader volunteer network of between 30 and 40 active collaborators. Javier emphasized that while the committee does not claim to represent every resident, it reflects widespread community concern.
The primary message of the upcoming demonstration is to maintain a democratic, peaceful gathering focused strictly on the needs of the enclave. Organisers reiterated that their sole purpose is to mobilize public support and compel effective administrative action.
