A court in Santo Domingo has ordered Jose Joel Matos to serve three months of pretrial detention over the alleged extortion of singer Yailin La Mas Viral.
The ruling was handed down by the Permanent Attention Court of the National District. Matos will be remanded at the Najayo Men's Correction and Rehabilitation Center while Dominican judicial authorities continue investigating the alleged blackmail scheme.
Legal proceedings were initiated following a formal complaint filed by the urban music performer, whose real name is Jorgina Lulu Guillermo Diaz. She reported receiving extortion demands threatening the public release of an intimate video and explicit photographs, alongside warnings concerning the physical safety of her daughter.
According to details presented in court, Yailin handed over RD$300,000, equivalent to approximately $5,000, in August 2026 after receiving the threats. Investigators stated that the funds were deposited into a bank account registered to Darivel Montero Severino, identified in court filings as the ex-wife of Matos.
Investigation into alleged extortion network
Speaking after the court hearing, defense attorney Randy Joel Banks, who represents Yailin, confirmed that prosecutors submitted key evidence supporting the request for preventive detention. Banks stated that law enforcement officials are also investigating another individual for potential involvement in the extortion operation.
According to the defense team, a total of three individuals are currently linked to the ongoing criminal investigation. However, Matos is the only suspect who has been formally brought before a judge to face judicial proceedings in connection with the case.
