WhatsApp will stop working on older smartphone models later this month following an update to minimum compatibility requirements by parent company Meta.
Under the new rule, official support will only be provided for devices running Android 5.0 or iOS 15.1 and higher. Smartphones that cannot update their operating systems to these versions will lose access to the messaging application.
WhatsApp will change its compatibility demands again shortly after this month's initial cutoff. Access will be blocked on Android devices that do not have version 6.0 or higher starting September 8. Apple models will require iOS 15.5 or later starting November 30.
Meta security and performance requirements
Meta said the updates are designed to guarantee platform security and performance on more modern systems. WhatsApp is owned by technology giant Meta Platforms, which regularly updates software requirements across its services.
In a message published on its support page, the company stated that it reviews the oldest software and devices with the fewest users every year. Meta added that these devices may also lack the latest security updates or the necessary features to run WhatsApp.
How to check device operating system version
Users can check whether their phone meets the new system requirements by reviewing their device settings. Android is Google's mobile operating system, while iOS is the operating system created by Apple for iPhones.
Android users should open their device settings, select About Phone, and look for Android Version or Software Update to check their current operating system and search for available downloads.
iPhone users can check their compatibility by opening settings, selecting General, and tapping About or Software Update to view their current iOS version and search for new downloads.
In app notifications for affected users
WhatsApp will display direct notifications inside the application before ending support for affected devices. The alerts will inform users about the need to update their operating system or replace their device.
Meta also stated that it will make regular updates to its support page to ensure the list includes the most recent compatible operating systems.
