WhatsApp has introduced a username feature that allows users to communicate on the platform without sharing their personal mobile phone numbers with unknown contacts.
The tool introduces a unique handle preceded by the @ symbol, creating a digital privacy mask for individual accounts. The update comes as mobile phone numbers are increasingly tied to online banking accounts, multi-factor authentication services, and personal security codes, making number exposure on public forums or buy-and-sell platforms a growing risk for spam and fraud.
By establishing a handle, individuals can participate in public chats or initiate conversations with new contacts while keeping their actual phone numbers hidden from anyone who does not already have them saved in their address book.
How WhatsApp handles function
The new handle operates alongside existing account details rather than replacing them. It does not alter the visible profile name displayed beneath an account photograph, such as a user's full name, nor does it replace the underlying telephone number linked to the service. Account creation and login authentication procedures also remain unchanged.
Each handle serves as an exclusive digital address within the messaging application. Handles must be between three and 35 characters long, and no two accounts can hold the same identifier. Users are able to modify or completely delete their chosen handle at any time through their account settings.
WhatsApp emphasized that the addition of handles does not transform the application into an open social media network like Instagram or X. The service will not feature a public directory or generate automated contact suggestions. To start a conversation using a handle, a sender must already know the recipient's exact identifier.
Setting up handles and privacy controls
Creating a handle is entirely optional. Users who prefer to retain traditional phone-number messaging can continue using the application without modifying their settings. For those wishing to adopt a handle, availability depends on app updates and account rollout schedules across different devices.
To set up an identifier, Android users open WhatsApp and select the profile section in the top right corner of the screen, while iPhone users access the profile through the tab labeled "You." Within the profile menu, users select Settings, open the Account section, and choose the Username option to type and reserve an available alias.
The platform provides two specific privacy settings to control who can initiate contact through a handle. The first option, labeled "Everyone," permits any person who obtains the handle to send a direct message. This setting is designed primarily for storefronts, commercial enterprises, and customer service desks seeking open public contact.
The second option, labeled "With key only," adds a four-digit security code requirement. Under this configuration, knowing a recipient's handle is insufficient to send a message. The sender must also enter a four-digit PIN provided directly by the account owner, blocking unsolicited messages from strangers.
Security safeguards and fraud prevention
To counter potential impersonation and fraudulent activity, WhatsApp has restricted and reserved thousands of handles associated with commercial banks, well-known corporations, government entities, and public figures. Additionally, each registered phone number is limited to a single unique handle.
Cybersecurity experts recommend that users avoid incorporating sensitive personal information into their handles, such as birth years, government identification numbers, or home address figures. Selecting an abstract alias reduces the risk of unintended data disclosure.
Security advisors also emphasize maintaining active two-step verification, which protects WhatsApp accounts using a separate six-digit PIN. Handles do not replace existing security mechanisms, and experts caution users against using identical numeric sequences for both their handle settings and their two-step verification PINs.
Use cases for private messaging
The handle system offers privacy improvements for individuals participating in large group chats, including neighborhood watch communities, workplace forums, and university student groups, where member numbers were previously visible to all participants.
It also provides a secure communication channel for individuals conducting transactions on online classified boards, using online dating platforms, or attending public gatherings where sharing a main phone number poses privacy risks.
For independent contractors, digital creators, and small business owners, handles allow professional contact details to be published on advertising materials or social media profiles without exposing personal mobile numbers.
