WhatsApp adds background noise removal and web calls

WhatsApp is adding new calling features including background noise suppression, host-controlled waiting rooms, and browser-based calling, parent company Meta announced.

The company stated in a press release that the new tools are being rolled out progressively and will soon become available to all users.

Among the key updates is a noise suppression feature designed to remove background sounds during calls. Meta said the tool will ensure that a user's voice remains clearly audible to the recipient. Users can activate the function directly within the call settings menu of the application.

Background noise cancellation technology filters out ambient sounds such as traffic, wind, or office chatter using digital audio processing. WhatsApp, which is used on both mobile phones and desktop computers, relies on such audio processing updates to improve call quality across varying internet connections and hardware environments.

Managing group call access

The update also introduces a waiting room feature for group calls, giving call creators control over who can join the conversation. When an organizer creates a WhatsApp call link and enables the setting requiring approval to join, incoming participants will be redirected to a waiting room until the host approves their entry.

Group video calling and link-based meeting invitations have become standard tools across messaging and teleconferencing platforms. Waiting rooms provide an extra layer of privacy and access control, preventing unauthorized users from entering group calls uninvited.

Web browser integration and call transfers

WhatsApp Web is also receiving major enhancements on desktop computers. Users can now make voice and video calls directly from their internet browser without downloading or installing the desktop application.

Meta said web browser users will have access to features available on other devices, including screen sharing, message reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab containing their complete call history and favorites. In addition, the update allows users to transfer active group calls between devices.

Meta Platforms Inc., headquartered in Menlo Park, California, acquired WhatsApp in 2014. The messaging service has grown into one of the most widely used communication tools globally for personal and business messaging.

Meta said all of the features are currently in the process of deployment and will be accessible across all supported devices once the gradual rollout is complete.
