Higher blood concentrations of vitamin B6 may be linked to a lower risk of experiencing moderate to severe depression symptoms, while most other common vitamins show no such protective relationship, according to research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. The findings come from an extensive investigation analyzing health and dietary data from tens of thousands of American adults.

Researchers evaluated data from more than 26,000 adult participants enrolled in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005 and 2014. Investigators assessed depressive symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire, a standard clinical screening tool known as the PHQ-9. They compared individual intake levels and blood concentrations of vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B9, and B12 against the presence and severity of depression. Approximately one in four participants in the study exhibited at least mild depressive symptoms.
In initial statistical analyses, higher levels of several different vitamins appeared to correlate with a lower prevalence of depression symptoms. However, that picture changed after researchers accounted for a broad range of confounding factors, including age, sex, income, education level, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and overall health status. Once those variables were controlled, nearly all of the observed associations between vitamin levels and depression vanished.
Vitamin B6 and neurotransmitter production
Vitamin B6 emerged as the sole exception in the analysis. A higher blood concentration of vitamin B6 maintained a weak but persistent association with a reduced likelihood of moderate-to-severe and severe depression. Biologically, vitamin B6 plays a critical role in synthesizing key neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA. These chemical messengers are essential for regulating mood, emotional processing, and central nervous system activity.
Also known as pyridoxine, vitamin B6 is a water-soluble nutrient that the human body cannot produce on its own. It is naturally present in a variety of foods, including poultry, fish, potatoes, chickpeas, and bananas. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which provided the raw data for the study, is a major national program conducted by federal health statistics agencies to monitor the nutritional status of the American population.
Lifestyle factors and clinical implications
Despite the observed connection, the study authors emphasized that their work does not prove vitamin B6 directly protects against mental health disorders. They stressed that the findings do not indicate that taking vitamin B6 supplements can treat clinical depression. Instead, the researchers noted that the relationship between nutrition and mental health is complex and depends heavily on a person's broader lifestyle habits and overall health status.
The Journal of Affective Disorders, which published the study, is an established peer-reviewed medical journal focusing on clinical research into mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar conditions. The research adds to a growing body of work investigating how specific vitamins interact with human physiology, following previous findings by scientists showing that vitamin B3 can significantly reduce the risk of developing glaucoma.
