Viber Names 5 Chat Habits That Annoy Users Most

Rakuten Viber has identified five common habits in online messaging that can breach the digital boundaries of the people on the other end of the chat. The list includes sending dozens of short messages instead of one, long voice messages, sudden phone calls, work-related messages outside office hours, and unnecessary replies in group chats.

The company's team shared the findings with LIGA.net.

Breaking One Thought Into Many Messages

Viber advised users not to split a single idea across a large number of separate messages, and instead formulate it as one piece of text. For longer messages, the app offers formatting tools, and it also has an artificial-intelligence-based feature that can help adjust the tone of a written message.

On voice messages, the company recommended checking with the other person first to see whether it is convenient for them to listen, and trimming long monologues where possible.

Calling Without Warning

Viber also advised against phoning someone without warning them first. According to a survey the company carried out in the summer of 2025, 37% of Ukrainians said they prefer text messages over calls.

If a matter genuinely requires a phone call, Viber suggested messaging the person first to arrange a time to talk rather than calling unannounced.

Work Messages After Hours

Work-related messages sent in the evening or on weekends should be left until the next working day unless the situation is urgent, the company said.

Clutter in Group Chats

In large group chats, Viber recommended replacing short replies such as "Ok" or "I'm in" with reactions instead, to avoid generating extra notifications for everyone in the group. For decisions that need input from several people, it suggested using the app's built-in poll feature rather than a string of individual replies.

Viber's Recent Features

Rakuten Viber is a messaging app owned by the Japanese e-commerce group Rakuten and widely used across Ukraine and Eastern Europe for text chats, voice messages and calls. In 2025, the app launched a marketplace feature for finding salons, shops and services. Separately, company data cited in the report showed that 48% of Ukrainians stay in touch with relatives abroad through chats and video calls.
