Rescue teams supported by drones are searching for two women reported missing in a mountainous zone bordering the Cotacachi-Cayapas ecological reserve. The search area lies between the provinces of Esmeraldas and Imbabura.
Relatives said the two women traveled from Santo Domingo to inspect land for purchase. They were returning to Quinindé when they reportedly vanished in the forest.
The disappearance was reported on Sunday, Aug. 1. According to complainants, the women arrived at Valle Esmeraldeño, in Malimpia parish, where they left their vehicles parked before walking into the mountains to view the properties.
Search operations and terrain conditions
Search patrols were organized due to the difficult access in the area. Operations involve the Quinindé Fire Department, the Land Force, and aerial support with drones from a private company.
A firefighter rescuer said weather conditions vary at the foothills of the Cotacachi-Cayapas reserve and the terrain is steep, featuring only trails opened by local residents. New search expeditions with mountain rescue specialists were organized for Thursday, Aug. 7.
